Competition Among Athletes

Competition Among Athletes (more specific, CrossFitters)...

The first thing I noticed on day one of training the youth football team, the Titans, was their competitive spirit.  What a positive thing to have between athletes! I thought to myself, “These kids are going to push each other to get stronger, faster, and better”.  Right?  Well, yes and no.  Quickly I saw the negative aspect of athletes competing amongst each other.
First to be abandoned was proper technique.  Second was full range of movement.  And finally, most disturbing of all, not completing all the reps!  Just to be finished first.  Now, we ALL know these improper ways of training will not get anyone close to their goals of fitness. Not to mention, potential injury the athlete faces. No matter the age or athletic background.
Competitors look for an edge, a way to get through the toughest WOD’s.  Competing against others in the box is an excellent tool to use if used correctly.  Be sure not to get in harm’s way or sell yourself short in the process.  Full range pushups, squats, and chin completely over the bar should be the first thing to shoot for.  Attention to detail if you will, rather than beating the fastest time or most rounds completed.  Proper technique, consistency of that technique then you can increase the intensity.  One beauty of CrossFit is that the workouts are measureable.  Not measurable to others but measurable to what you have done previously.  Let this be a lesson to us all.  Compete against the one athlete you control…YOU!
